This quote is from the first chapter of Fr Stanley's book. As you say the pope views things with the eyes of faith. My legalist friends are afraid he is drifting from the pro life fold...that he is too nuanced. That the Catholic activist won't get this mercy approach. The gospel is a combination of law and mercy and they see him as losing cite of the law like liberal protestantism.
